- Advising on legal aspects and strategies for intellectual property protection for new brands, products, inventions and designs;
- Conducting trade mark, patent and design searches, evaluating the results and making recommendations to clients;
- Coordinating global intellectual property filing programs for clients, both local and international companies;
- Filing, prosecution and maintenance of patents, trademarks and designs;
- IP audits and due diligence.
Her practice also encompasses transactional aspects of intellectual property such as drafting of assignment and licence agreements and advising on security interests for intellectual property, as well as recordal of such transactions with the Registry. Her experience spans various industries including property and construction, life sciences and the food and beverage industry.
Apart from her legal qualifications, Winnie also has technical knowledge in pharmaceuticals/life sciences., and her practice includes advising on patent and regulatory aspects in this field.
Winnie also handles contentious matters at Registry and court level. She undertakes trade mark opposition matters, trade mark and patent invalidation and revocation actions. She has also been involved in infringement cases in Singapore in the higher courts, and the Court of Appeal, particularly in the patents arena. Amongst the court cases she has been involved in are:-
- a landmark patent infringement cases in the life sciences field involving the HIV-2 virus;
- patent infringement involving emergency lift systems;
- patent infringement involving construction equipment; and
- patent revocations in the chemical field.
In terms of professional qualifications, Winnie is a registered patent agent in Singapore, as well as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. She also has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and was called to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1991 and to the Singapore Bar in 1993. Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in pharmacology, with a minor in biochemistry. She is active in intellectual property associations holding executive/committee positions in AIPPI, Asian Patents Attorney Association and the Famous and Well-Known Trade Marks Committee (Vice-Chair 2012) of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA). Winnie also sits on the Patent Examination Committee, which is under the purview of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.
