[image]Melvin graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Second Class Honours (Upper) from the National University of Singapore in 2008 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2009. He was placed on the Final Year as well as the Overall Dean’s List in NUS and received the APAA Patent Law Book Prize awarded to the best student in the Intellectual Property course. The 2012 edition of AsiaLaw Profiles cited Melvin as being “well regarded in the market”.

Melvin's main areas of practice include :-

 

  • general civil and commercial litigation pertaining mainly to intellectual property matters;

  • general advisory work on intellectual property issues;

  • trade mark and patent portfolio management;

  • registration, opposition, revocation, invalidation and prosecution; and

  • domain dispute resolution as well as enforcement of intellectual property rights, including raids on counterfeit goods and border enforcement.

Sample matters on which he has been involved in are:

  • Assisting in a dispute involving a cross-border contractual dispute totalling US$5 million relating to the manufacture and sale of intermediate bulk containers in Indonesia;

  • Assisting in a dispute involving misrepresentation in a cross-border sale and purchase of shares by an overseas investment company;

  • Assisting in a contractual dispute involving the alleged failure to pay for the setting up of an integrated computer system for a local educational institution;

  • Assisting in an international arbitration and applying for an injunction relating to a distribution agreement with a major cosmetic company;

  • Assisting in defending against various patent revocation actions on behalf of a major petrochemical company;

  • Managing the trade mark portfolios of major international corporations, including overseeing the filing and prosecution of trade marks, both locally and internationally, and attending to the corresponding opposition, revocation and invalidation proceedings;

  • Advising on various intellectual property matters with respect to patents, trade marks, passing off, copyright, registered designs and confidential information;

  • Advising on the pharmaceutical regulatory and approval process;

  • Overseeing domain name dispute resolutions;

  • Organising and participating in raids on suspected counterfeit and pirated goods;

  • Advising on and drafting of various intellectual property and commercial agreements, including intellectual property ownership, assignment and licensing agreements; franchising arrangements and agreements; non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements; and online website and privacy terms and conditions.
